Michael Corleone: The Rise of the Anti-Hero

He’ll take the risks and do the killing. He will protect the family. First meeting Michael Corleone, in uniform, in a crowd of suited, dark haired gangsters, we saw the bright young hope of the Corleone family. Refusing to take part in the murderous mobster family business, it’s the shooting of Dito Von Corleone, that Michael free-falls into endless corruption. The Godfather, one of my favorite American crime films, makes me accept Michael as an anti-hero for wanting to defend his father’s legacy. A loved outsider who’s charm could have led him to becoming anything he desired, instead chose to represent the worst of everything his family represented, and that is something I am willing to root for.
